Ajrak is a craft whose origins can be traced to the civilisations of Mohenjo-daro and has since been practised in the regions of Sindh, Kutch and parts of Rajasthan. Each piece of Ajrak is a result of sixteen tedious steps and measures to ensure that there is no compromise in the vibrancy of the colours and precision in the print patterns on both sides of the cloth is achieved. It is commonly said amongst artisans that Ajrakh (Aaaj- Rakh) means to ˜keep it for a day, the longer the time dedicated to the cloth, the finer the quality.

Part of what makes the craft so unique is the fact that unlike other crafts, where the patterns are directly printed on the cloth, Ajrak uses the method of resist-dye to achieve geometrical vibrant patterns.
